These sets were imported on 2008 & they are powered by many special technological features. This DMU has the second highest maximum power out of all DMU classes. It’s just below 2000hp & due to this massive power S10 has the ability to start the journey with a higher acceleration & to transport higher number of passengers than other DMUs.
S10 has got this features due to many reasons. The S10 engine or the prime mover is powered with Common Rail Diesel Injection with ADEC (Advanced Diesel Engine Control). Common Rail technology means the procedure of spraying diesel in a high-pressure chamber to the combustion chamber through the injectors. This results a complete combustion. And these engines are planned according to environment condition conventions established by European Union. The AC current generated by an AC Generator is converted to DC current by converters before supplying to the Traction Motors. S10 & S12 engines are connected to two generators. That’s also a speciality of this DMU.
The internal controlling of this DMU is completely done by a Computer. There is a new computer control system for the assistance. The driver can use the Touch Screen to control the computer. Dashboard of S10 consist with normal lever type controls & this DMU is equipped with a Radio Communication System for the driver to communicate with the guard room at the end of the train. Due to these reasons S10 DMU is a high efficient locomotive in Sri Lanka.
This DMU also posses the ability of connecting multiple sets together. It can connect up to 3 sets together. SLR did a test run by connecting 3 S10s. Because these DMUs are normally used for slow trains & office trains, the seat arrangement of this is similar to S8 & S9. A S10 set has 6 units including a Power car, 4 passenger coaches & a dummy car. A passenger coach is 65 feet long & equipped with Vestibules. 1400 passengers can travel in a single set.
Though SLR did a test run to Kandy using these sets, S10 normally don’t run beyond Rambukkana on the main line. But these DMUs have travelled to Kandy in special occasions like ‘Esala Perahera’ as special trains. These sets normally run on Coastal line, Nothern line, Puttlan line & up to Rambukkana on the Main line & they cannot run on KV line. There are no records that these sets were in operation on Matale line & Eastern line. S10s are used on many office trains such as Maho train & Samudra Devi.
Some S10 DMUs (879, 880, 884, 886, 887 & 888) were painted in Dark blue, White with a Red strip after the scheduled repairs at Ratmalana Railway Workshops. These sets are maintained by Electronic Power Coaches Shed (EPCS).
