
Class M2 569 “Ontario”

A special train will depart from Colombo Fort to Jaffna on 19th December 2014 at 10.00am for the 60th anniversary of Class M2 locomotives. This train will be hauled by the first locomotive of Class M2 batch, No.569 named Ontario. It will stop only at Anuradhapura. This is the first instance of a M2 reaching Jaffna after June 1990.
These locomotives were manufactured by General Motors – Electro Motive Division in Canada. Five Class M2 locomotives were imported in 1954 & 9 more locomotives were imported few years after. There are 4 sub classes under Class M2 as M2a, M2b, M2c & M2d this loco can be known as the overall best locomotive class of Sri Lanka Railway Department.
