This is same as the S2, S3 & S4. A set consist of a power car, 2 passenger cars & a dummy car. Power car was imported from Hitachi-Japan & other coaches were made locally using wood mostly.
The original livery of these sets were Red & was painted in Green & Brown like S5s in late 1970s. Ten of these Diesel Hydraulic DMUs was imported & they had PAXMAN V12 YXJL type prime movers. But later they got replaced by PAXMAN VEGA (Se/RP 160) type prime movers & re-painted in orange & silver.
These were successful in those days & mostly they were used for office trains. They ran on almost every line including coastal line Kelani Valley line, Puttlam line & up to Rambukkana on the main line.
After reasonable years of service, these sets were withdrawn from service one by one. The problems occurred was technical failures, failures in under frames & the difficulty in obtaining spare parts etc. Only no.736 is on running condition & now it’s being used as a Rail Bus.
