The speciality of Class S2 DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is that only the Power Cars were imported to Sri Lanka. Dummy units & all passenger coaches were manufactured in Sri Lanka after receiving the bogies & mechanical parts. First S2 (No.574) arrived Sri Lanka in 1958 & the remaining sets on 1959.
A complete Class S2 DMU consist of n Power Car + 3 Passenger Coaches + a Dummy Unit. The maximum capacity of a set was 300 passengers. Another speciality of this DMU is the ability to connect up to 4 sets. Most of the present DMUs’ can only connect 2 or 3 sets.
These DMUs’ were used on almost every broad gauge track. All of the Class S2 sets were withdrawn in 1970s. They provided their service for about 20 years from 1956 to 1978. Adtranz Company bought Schindler Carriages & Wagons Company in 1998 after they stopped manufacturing trains. They only manufacture elevators at present.
Sources to find information about Class S2 was very rare & the only photograph here is the photograph included in the Sinhala book “ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ඩීසල් දුම්රිය” (Diesel locomotives of Sri Lanka) written by Mr. Nalin Abeysinghe. Therefore we would like to thank Mr. Nalin Abeysinghe for giving the permission to publish this photograph.
