Many projects started to improve Sri Lanka Railway services under Indian funds recently. Class S11 DMUs arrive Sri Lanka as an above mentioned project. These DMUs were imported under 2 batches. First batch was Red, White & Blue in colour while the second batch was fully red. All these DMUs are now painted in red colour at Hydraulic Locomotive Shed (HLS) Dematagoda.
Different people bear different opinions about this DMU. Some people say that this is an excellent train & others say that this DMU is not up to standards. We should consider the points of both parties to come to a final decision & that decision is up to you.
When considering the DMUs running in Sri Lanka, S11 has some special features. Out of the normal passenger transporting DMUs only Class S11 & Class S12 has sanitary facilities (S2, S3 had this facility. S5s too have this facility but they don’t run daily for ordinary passengers).
Seats of the Class S11 are fixed perpendicular to the train. This seat arrangement was also available on S1 power sets & these seats are not made of fiber glass as on other DMUs. And there is a fan per seat. Another speciality of this DMU is the Air Suspension Facility. Due to these Air Suspension Bags fixed to the bogie of the train passengers can experience a smooth ride. Availability of Second class carriages is another special feature in Class S11. Due to these features it seems like the passengers like this train.
When considering technical facts a major feature of this DMU is the weight. The whole set is about 100 tons in weight which is less than the other DMUs. There are some advantages of this feature. First thing is this can reach a higher speed using less power. Second advantage is the low fuel consumption. So this DMUs are economically profitable. Manufacturers have focused on decreasing the weight specially because of the request of SLR.
Class S11 is similar to some DMUs in India. The Indian DMU of this kind consist of a power car, 3 passenger cars & a dummy car. But S11 consist of 6 units as requested by SLR. It have a power car, 3 3rd class passenger cars, a 2nd class car & a 2nd class dummy car.
SLR had requested ICF that these DMUs should be resistant to rusting. Therefore ICF had made the coaches with stainless steel & the face of the DMU with fiberglass. Most of the parts of this DMU has been manufactured by different companies & assembled by ICF.
The coupler of S11 is an Indian coupler named ‘Shaakhur’. Its speciality is reducing horizontal & vertical movements between two coaches. Therefore the journey gets smooth & the disadvantage of this coupler is the disability to connect to a different coach. This coupler doesn’t detach in an emergency like the auto coupler. Therefore there’s a risk of derailing the whole train. There are an auto coupler & a screw coupler on both faces of the train to connect multiple sets & to be pulled by another train in an emergency.
A set is powered by a prime mover with a power of 1350hp. The acceleration of this DMU is low due to the extra coach & the parallel power supply to the traction motors. Therefore it takes more time to reach the desired speed. So these DMUs are not suitable for slow trains.
Apart from the pros there are some cons about this set. The main defect is the low level finishing. These sets don’t have the distinguish look that a product should have. Some said that these DMUs are repaired trains due to some parts were painted by hand & due to some rusted parts. It can be seen that frames of the shutters are rusted after few months of service.
These trains were expected to haul long distance services. These sets are maintained by Hydraulic Locomotive Shed (HLS) & S11 Shed at Dematagoda. S11 went on her maiden journey with ‘Ruhunu Kumari’ in 2011. These can be seen running with 2 sets connected. A S11 is used for the ‘Dayata Kirula’ intercity express train which runs from Colombo to Jaffna. This is the first time where a DMU was used for an Intercity Express. These DMUs normally run on coastal line, Puttlam line & up to Rambukkana on the main line & Nothern line.
Two of these S11 DMUs had to face an unfortunate accidents. S11 899 hit the Observation Saloon of the Kandy bound Intercity at Alawwa in 2011. The driver & the assistant driver & a foreigner died in this incident. This DMU (No. 899) is now being repaired at the Ratmalana Railway Workshops & the face of it was re-designed using metal.
Class S11 902 which was hauling Palai bound Dayata Kirula collided face to face with the stopped Class M2 570 (Alberta) which was hauling Matara bound Rajarata Rajina train at Pothuhera railway station. S11 902 was destroyed & according to the officials it’s unrecoverable. Alberta was seriously damaged in this incident & it’s now being repaired at Ratmalana Workshops.
